Update from Brooke Olsen-Farrell, Superintendent of Schools
"The secure building has been lifted for FHGS and FHUMHS.
Law enforcement has told us there is no direct threat to the schools, however out of an abundance of caution there will be no outside activities today at the direction of law enforcement. If anything changes we will update you with more information. As you know the safety and well-being of students and staff is always our top priority."

Good Morning!
This messasge is from Brooke Olsen-Farrell, Superintendent of Schools
"As you know the safety and well-being of students and staff is always our top priority.
At about 10:00 this morning, we were informed of police activity in the neighborhood near our schools.
As a precaution, our Fair Haven Grade School and Fair Haven Middle School/High School are in Secure the Building mode. Business is occurring as usual inside the building but no outside activities are occurring at this time.
All students and staff are safe. We will let you know when this has been lifted and follow-up with more information as appropriate."

Please mark your calendars for the return of the FHUMHS MEGA Day! MEGA Day brings together our Art, Band, Chorus, and Theater programs in one evening. The event begins at 5:00 pm, on April 13th, with grades 7-12 art show through the FHUMS lobby and cafeteria. At 6:00 pm we will start a combined band, chorus, and theater performance in the gymnasium. These events will be recorded and shared through our website afterward.
We are very excited to showcase the amazing talents we have at FHUMHS. Please join us to celebrate and recognize the creativity of our students!

On Wednesdays, members from Caring Canines come to visit our students. This week we had three dogs, Murfee, Brodie and Taft. The teams enjoy spending time with Middle School students during Inquiry along with receiving a few quick pets as the High School students walk by. Thank you, Caring Canines, for bringing smiles to many of our kids.

Students in Mr. Merolle's Horticulture Class recently experienced the process of sugaring, from tapping the trees to boiling down the collected sap. They also transplanted young petunias being raised for a plant sale later this spring.

Last Friday, the district counslors and clinicians gathered during their inservice to practice expressive art therapy techniques. They were guided through an expressive arts process and discussed tools and techniques relevant to using expressive arts in the school community.

FHUMHS students did an excellent job today with the planned practice of a "Lock in Place" event. We had students and teachers practice barricading and preparing to either counter or evacuate. Their participation in the ALICE drill was spectacular and a great opportunity to practice maintaining a safe learning environment. Please feel free to contact the Administrative Team if you have any questions.

FHUMHS is excited to announce the start of their own Future Farmers of America (FFA) program. This opportunity is available to any 7th -12th grader interested! For more information, contact Mr. Levesque by email: alevesque@svuvt.org, or stop by his room for a visit.

FHUMHS students have work displayed in the "Art from the Schools" exhibit at Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester. The Opening Reception was this past Saturday, March 18th, with work on display through April 23rd. Please consider taking a drive to Manchester and witness this wonderful show in person.

The Slate Valley Universal Preschool Program will be conducting its last developmental screening of the year for children 0-5 years of age living in Benson, Castleton, Fair Haven, Hubbardton, Orwell and West Haven. The screening involves activities that are both fun for young children and help us learn about a child's motor, cognitive, and language skills. Vision and hearing will also be screened. This screening will be Thursday, March 23rd at Castleton Elementary School. Call to make an appointment.

Congratulations, Sawyer Ramey!
FAIR HAVEN UNION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATHLETE NAMED
GATORADE VERMONT BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
CHICAGO (March 15, 2023) — In its 38th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Gatorade today announced Sawyer Ramey of Fair Haven Union High School is the 2022-23 Gatorade Vermont Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Ramey is the first Gatorade Vermont Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Fair
Haven Union High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Ramey as Vermont’s best high school boys basketball player. Ramey joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports,
including Chet Holmgren (2020-21, Minnehaha Academy, Minn.), Trae Young (2016-17, Norman North High School, Ok.), Jayson Tatum (2015-16, Chaminade College Preparatory School, Mo.), and Karl-Anthony Towns (2013-14 & 2012-13, St. Joseph High School, N.J.).
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound senior guard led the Slaters to a 25-1 record and the Vermont Division II state tournament semifinals. Ramey averaged 16.4 points, 7.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game entering the final four and was a nominee for the Vermont Coaches Association Player of the Year. He concluded his prep career with more than 1,200 points and 500 assists. Ramey has volunteered locally on behalf of Fair Haven Concerned, a non-profit providing food, shelter and heating assistance to families in need. He is also a member of Fair Haven’s Athletic Leadership Council and the National Honor Society. “Sawyer is the consummate point guard,” said Fair Haven Union High School coach Bob Prenevost. “He’s a proven and capable scorer, but he’s at his best facilitating for others. When challenges arise, he’s the guy his teammates look to for leadership and direction.” Ramey has maintained a 3.93 weighted GPA in the classroom. He remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
Ramey joins recent Gatorade Vermont Boys Basketball Players of the Year Jonah Cattaneo (2021-22, Montpelier High School), Michel Ndayishimiye (2020-21, Rice Memorial High School), Logan Wendell (2019-20, St. Johnsbury Academy), and Jamison Evans (2018-19, Rutland High School), among the state’s list of former award winners.
Being a Gatorade Player of the Year means paying it forward for the next generation. Through Gatorade’s Play it Forward initiative, every Player of the Year receives a grant to give to one of Gatorade’s social impact partners, supporting Gatorade’s ambition to fuel the future of sport. To date, Gatorade Player of the Year winners’ grants have
totaled more than $3.5 million across more than 1,300 organizations.
For nearly 40 years, Gatorade has honored high school athletes at the top of their game as teammates, supporting their communities and achieving academic success. From CEOs and coaches to star athletes and community leaders, Gatorade Player of the Year winners showcase the power of sport.
