Earlier in July, FHUMHS Co-Principal, Ms. Paquette and FHGS Principal, Mrs. Infurna participated in session 2 of the Waddington Institute for School Leaders - Part 2, Cohort 3. This professional development guides participants in becoming stronger, more effective leaders by initiating self-reflection and awareness of growth. Both Ms. Paquette and Mrs. Infurna have participated in an earlier Waddington experience.
Mrs. Haley, our Middle School Administrative Assistant, is creating lasting memories with some of her all time favorite people! Earlier this summer she and her family spent a week in Mystic, CT. They had an especially great time at the Aquarium!
This week, the over 20 year tradition continues as a group of district middle school students attend the Great Adventure Project (GAP). As typical of years past, FHUMS Social Studies Teacher, Mr. Clark along with retired FHGS Teacher, Mr. Stanton, are leading the charge. During daily kayak and hiking adventures, students collect water samples and observe wildlife, gathering information to create a report on the health of our local environment. Students beautify all destinations by collecting trash, which is also included in their final report. Thank you to Mr. Clark and Mr. Stanton for continuing this wonderful tradition.
Slate Valley Summer Happenings: Last week, FHUHS Science teacher, Mr. Merolle, visited the gardens on campus to harvest over 200 beautiful bulbs of garlic and to check on the bees, who are reportedly having a very productive summer. Many flowers are in full bloom, with other fruits and vegetables beginning to ripen.
Slate Valley Summer Happenings: Submitted by BVS Pre-K teacher, Ms. Laura Dailey.
" This summer I accomplished 20 hours of professional development during the Summer Early Childhood Educators Institute, I taught a week of Kinder Camp and am working on ideas for next year's curriculum. I have also enjoyed time with my kids hiking, swimming and being at our family camp in the Adirondacks."
Summer months are for making memories and this is just what Ms. Gauthier and her daughter did during their trip to Oregon. They walked the beach, searched tide pools for starfish, sand dollars, anemones, and crabs. They also found the iconic Haystack Rock seen in the movie Goonies. Thanks for sharing with us Ms. Gauthier!
Several faculty and staff from Castleton Elementary School are spending their summer working at this year's Castleton Rec Program. Children are engaged in daily activities, crafts, and occasional special events such as visits to the local library, trips to the beach and visits from members of Caring Canines.
Shortly after students left for summer break, Mrs. Teann McCrea jumped into teaching a graduate level course called "Project Based Learning Made Easy". In this course, participants immersed theselves in a project based learning experience with the goal of developing a unit that corresponded with their grade level interest. The course focused on how to incorporate project based learning into anexisting curriculum and state education standards, with the goal of boosting student involvement, achievement, and interest. Thank you Teann for offering your expertise with this class. Teachers from not only our district, but throughout Vermont, will be incorporating these new lessons into their 2024-25 academic year.

Slate Valley Summer Happenings: Every summer tiled classrooms throughout the district are cleared and cleaned to receive new coats of wax. This daunting task is accomplished by our amazing custodial crew. We thank them for this often overlooked work, and appreciate their efforts of creating shiny floors to welcome back students at the start of a new school year.

While in Bergen, Norway, the group took a spectacular ferry ride through the Fjords. Mrs. Diercksen commented, "The trip was for pleasure, but in my opinion, travel is always educational."
Slate Valley Summer Happenings: FHUMHS Library- Media Specialist, Mrs. Crumb, has been hard at work reorganizing the middle and high school library. The nonfiction books are now shelved by topics, while the fiction books are being categorized by genres. For two years Mrs. Crumb has observed how students now search for books, she hopes this new method will
make it easier for students to find them. Great job Mrs. Crumb, and thank you!
Slate Valley Summer Happenings: Earlier in the week, Instructional Assistant Mentors Linda Corliss, Corey Kendall, and Jill McClure met with Assistant Principal of Student Services, Bonnie Lenihan, to begin planning for the start of a new IA mentoring year.

Mrs. Clement shared it was a dream destination to visit, and that they had a wonderful time. A few places the Clements went to are Dublin, Waterford, and Cliffs of Moher.
