Ms. Blackbird played Eclipse Theme games today during P.E. Some grades played "Complete the Eclipse" which required groups to toss beanbags from different distances in order to cover the sun (yellow hoop) completely! Other grades played Eclipse Tag. In this game, students tried to tag as many friends as possible, turning them into moons. Once turned into a moon, they had to find a yellow hoop to cover up until an untagger can come release them! What creative, fun ways to celebrate the Solar Eclipse!
Ms. Molis and Mrs. Winrich taught their first grade classes how the moon blocks the sun during a solar eclipse. Their students made fun hats to demonstrate the process.
Using various methods, Mrs. Ray demonstrated to the fourth grade the mechanics of a Solar Eclipse. One student came dressed for the special occassion!
Mrs. Lanfear's and Ms. Redding's second grade classes made solar eclipse crowns while learning about why this event is so important today.

This past trimester, 5th grade learned about the Earth, Sun, Moon, and stars using their observations of shadows and changing patterns in the sky. Students explored the planets within our solar system and conducted research on one planet of their choice. Students researched unique facts about their planet, physical characteristics, possibility of life, any known satellites or robots that have explored the planet, and much more. Over February break, students created models of the solar system and were able to be as creative as they wanted! The only requirements for their model was that it must include the sun and all eight planets, the sizes of each planet were somewhat proportionate to their actual sizes, and all objects were clearly labeled. Some students created their models using clay, painted paper or styrofoam balls, used paper mache, and even 3D printed to construct their design! One student made his model look like a space version of minecraft and other students used umbrellas/coat hangers to hang their model from above. It was amazing to see how realistic and different each project came out!

Carl the Cougar has been perusing the cafeteria this week during our Family Lunches. On Monday we saw families from Kindergarten students join us, yesterday on Tuesday, we hosted families from First Grade, and today the 2nd and 3rd graders were joined by their family members. It has been the highlight of the week for many and we love seeing our community in the building.
Good Afternoon,
While conditions are improving at Fair Union Middle/High School they have not improved to the level they need to resume occupancy of the building. As a result FHUMHS will be closed through Friday, April 5th. Please be assured we are working as quickly and carefully to address the situation at Fair Haven Union Middle & High School (FHUMHS). We are working closely with experts in the field and state officials. Safety is our number one priority.
Remote days are not an option; those went away after the pandemic. Additionally, we still do not have access to the building to get student or staff materials. A lot of the legal flexibility to educate students went away after the pandemic. 51% of our students must physically be in the school building per the law for it to count as a school day. For those who are interested the legal citation is: 16 V.S.A. 1071(a)(1) “For purposes of this section, a majority of students enrolled in a school must be recorded on the school roll as in attendance on any day counted as a student attendance day.” That requirement has not been expanded to include all-school attendance through remote means.
I am requesting a waiver for the missed days from the Agency of Education. The state requires students in attendance for 175 days. With the cancellation of school this week it brings our total to 174 student days.
We are optimistic that the situation will continue to improve over the next couple of days. If the situation persists into next week we will reassess our plan which would likely add days to the end of the school year. Again, I will keep you updated as I have more information. Thank you for your patience, understanding and flexibility in this matter.
As with the previous days, the Stafford Bus will run as scheduled.
Sincerely,
Brooke Olsen-Farrell
Happy Instructional Assistant's Day! Today, and everyday, the Slate Valley community is grateful for your contributions to our district! The connections you create while helping our students learn is invalualbe. Your patience promotes progress, you enable confidence and coordinate the chaos around our students to facilitate success. You are most definitely our behind the scene superheros! Thank you!
Today, Dr. Helen Mango from Castleton University visited CES and talked about fossils with grades K through 4. A special thank you to Mrs. Rampone for arranging this fun and informative presentation.
